This experience contains several standard biblical NDE elements including the out-of-body experience, encountering spiritual beings, and a form of life review. The presence of light and the peaceful, loving atmosphere align with some biblical descriptions of the spiritual realm. The experience of expanded consciousness and awareness beyond the physical body could be interpreted as consistent with the biblical understanding of humans having both physical and spiritual dimensions.
However, the experience includes highly problematic elements from a biblical perspective. The most significant issue is the explicit presentation of reincarnation and past lives, which directly contradicts the biblical teaching in Hebrews 9:27 that humans die once and then face judgment. The notion that reincarnation is "optional" and that one can negotiate about returning for a "last incarnation" fundamentally contradicts biblical eschatology. Additionally, the encounter with George Gurdjieff rather than biblical figures, and the absence of any mention of God, Jesus, judgment, or salvation through Christ makes this experience largely incompatible with biblical theology. The negotiation about retaining memories and making deals about incarnations suggests a works-based or karma-based system rather than grace-based salvation.
In December 1979, after four months in India, Doug became severely ill with amoebic dysentery, hepatitis A, and dengue fever. His body weakened to the point where death was imminent. As he lay dying in his hotel room, he experienced a profound shift in consciousness, observing his body from outside while feeling expansive awareness that reached to the edge of the universe.
He watched his roommate, a nurse, take his pulse and drop his wrist in despair when she found no signs of life. From his elevated perspective, he observed her unsuccessful attempts to measure his blood pressure and check for breath with a mirror. Throughout this, he felt no pain or distress, only a sense of perfect peace and the realization that everything in his life, despite its suffering, had been perfect. His experience included a remarkable life review where not just his current life, but many previous lives appeared in visual bubbles, each showing an entire lifetime from birth to death in an instant. He became aware that reincarnation is part of the human experience but is optional. After recognizing the addictive pull toward rebirth, he shifted into what he described as a fifth dimension bathed in golden light, where he was greeted with overwhelming joy by beings he knew intimately. A being identifying himself as George Gurdjieff appeared and requested Doug return to his body. After negotiating to retain his memories of the experience, Doug agreed to return with the promise that this would be his last required incarnation. Upon re-entering his cold, dense body, his roommate was shocked by his reanimation, and an Indian doctor mysteriously appeared to provide medical assistance without being called. |
