Marina's experience presents a complex spiritual battle with both biblical and problematic elements. The dramatic struggle between life and death, visualized as a tug-of-war, uniquely depicts spiritual warfare. Her supernatural strength during this battle could reflect divine empowerment, reminiscent of biblical accounts where God strengthens His people in crisis (Philippians 4:13). The bright light asking about her readiness to die and accepting her desire to accomplish good works before death shows divine patience and purpose for her continued life. Her response focusing on not having "done anything good" reveals an innate understanding of life's moral purpose. However, Marina's post-NDE spiritual journey raises serious biblical concerns. While maintaining nominal belief in Jesus, she embraced reincarnation as "completely natural" with "no doubts," directly contradicting Hebrews 9:27: "It is appointed for people to die once, and after this the judgment." Her turn to Hindu and Buddhist texts for answers represents syncretism incompatible with biblical Christianity. Though she remained in the Protestant church initially, she stopped attending and expanded her faith to include non-Christian spiritual practices. This trajectory from a Christ-centered faith toward Eastern mysticism and reincarnation demonstrates how NDEs, while real experiences, can lead to spiritual deception when interpreted outside biblical truth. The experience itself may have been genuine, but Marina's interpretation led her away from rather than toward biblical Christianity.
Four days before her 16th birthday in May 1976, Marina suffered carbon monoxide poisoning in her bathroom when workers had removed the exhaust pipe from the water heater without warning the family. After becoming dizzy while washing her hair, she lost consciousness. She found herself in a long tunnel, moving forward without a body, and realized she was dying. An intense battle ensued between Marina and death, which she visualized as pulling a rope with a flag in the middle. She fought with extraordinary strength that surprised her, especially given her normally weak hands. The struggle continued until a bright light appeared and asked, "Marina, are you ready to die?" She responded, "No, no. I'm only 16 years old and I still haven't done anything good." She then felt herself returning to life as death gave up on her. Upon regaining consciousness, she found medical staff trying to remove her clothes, which she initially misinterpreted as an assault attempt due to her confused state. The ambulance had arrived and, according to her mother, Marina was pronounced clinically dead in the ambulance. The experience eliminated her fear of death and led to expanded religious exploration beyond her Protestant upbringing, particularly into Hindu and Buddhist concepts including reincarnation, though she maintained her belief in Jesus.
