The total love he experienced without judgment could reflect an encounter with divine love, and his complete transformation from a destructive lifestyle as an alcoholic drug dealer to a productive member of society mirrors biblical accounts of radical conversion. The peace and freedom from pain he experienced might represent a glimpse of the peace that comes from God. His ability to hear and comprehend events while clinically dead supports the biblical view that humans are more than merely physical beings.
However, significant concerns arise from a biblical perspective, particularly regarding the psychic abilities John developed after his NDE. His ability to scan aura fields, detect illness through supernatural means, and involuntarily receive and transmit psychic information about people aligns more with practices the Bible explicitly warns against in passages about divination and spiritism. The involuntary nature of these abilities, where he "blurts out" information before realizing what he's saying, resembles mediumistic practices rather than biblical spiritual gifts which are under the control of the believer. While John maintains uncertainty about God's existence despite his experience, the Bible teaches that genuine encounters with the divine lead to clear knowledge of God. The absence of any moral or spiritual accountability in his experience, combined with the development of occult-like abilities, suggests influences that are not aligned with biblical Christianity.
John was undergoing a bronchoscopy procedure in 1998 when he was given codeine, to which he was allergic. The procedure initially went well, but upon waking, he couldn't breathe and pushed the emergency button to summon the nurse. After telling her "I can't breathe," everything went black and a major panic ensued among the medical staff. John was clinically dead for what he estimates was at least 8 minutes, during which the medical team tried everything to resuscitate him without success because, as he states, he did not want to come back.
During his clinical death, John floated in a sea of very dark blackness where he experienced total love without any judgment or negativity. He felt completely calm with no pain, describing it as wonderful and amazing, like graduation day when he was finally free and ready to move on. The darkness was completely flat black, yet he had no fear of any kind. He could hear the doctor talking to interns about what to do, using him as a teaching tool as if his death was no big deal. The doctor asked what should be done to bring him back, and a female voice suggested putting pressure on the nerves at the points of the jaw, which successfully resuscitated him. John perceived a small, fuzzy dot of light in the distance during his experience, though not clearly defined. He was curled up in the darkness like a baby in the womb, feeling totally safe and loved in a way he had never experienced before or since. Before the procedure, he had told the nurse that if anything went wrong, not to bring him back, as if he somehow knew they would make an error and he would pass over. The experience gave him a sense of transition, as if being held in the womb of the universe. When John was finally resuscitated, he was extremely angry about being brought back against his will. The experience transformed his life significantly - he went from being an alcoholic drug dealer to working for a nationwide security company and installing security systems. He developed heightened psychic sensitivities, including the ability to scan people's aura fields and detect illness, and experienced episodes of involuntarily "blurting out" psychically received information about people. The experience eliminated his fear of death and left him certain of an afterlife. |
