However, the experience contains significant elements that contradict biblical doctrine. Most concerning is the explicit mention of reincarnation and past lives, with James understanding that he had "experienced similar things before and had lived other lives." This directly contradicts the biblical teaching in Hebrews 9:27 that humans die once and then face judgment. The concept of choosing to incarnate or having multiple earthly lives is incompatible with biblical theology. Additionally, while the beings showed unconditional love, there was no mention of God, Jesus, or any need for salvation through faith. James was at a beach in Japan during the summer of 1962 when a typhoon off the coast created dangerous surf conditions with five rows of breakers. He decided to attempt diving through all five rows and then body surf back to shore. After successfully navigating the first two breakers, he became trapped in a spot where waves repeatedly crashed down on him, driving him to the bottom. This cycle continued until he was too exhausted to fight to the surface, and he felt certain he was going to drown. His last earthly thoughts were of how heartbroken his mother would be upon learning of his death.
As James accepted his fate, he experienced an overwhelming sense of peace unlike anything he had ever felt before. This peaceful feeling was the most profound he had ever experienced, completely replacing his panic and fear. At this moment, he noticed an oval opening about five feet wide appearing before him, with three female spirit beings looking out from within it. He could feel unconditional love emanating from these beings, and he understood with absolute certainty that his true home was with them. The attraction was so powerful that he wanted to go with them, no longer caring if he died. His vision seemed to expand to 360 degrees, and he felt he was perceiving without using his physical eyes. From these spirit beings, James received knowledge about the nature of existence. He understood that he had experienced similar situations before and had lived other lives, suggesting a form of pre-mortal existence or reincarnation. The beings communicated that Earth is not our true home and that after this life, we return to our real home with them. At the moment when James fully surrendered to joining the beings, he suddenly floated to the surface where, remarkably, no waves were crashing down on him. He was able to catch his breath, and each subsequent wave gently washed him toward shore. His friend ran up shouting that he thought James had drowned. James lay in the surf for several minutes before he could stand. He kept this experience secret for many years, initially feeling ashamed that he had wanted to die, viewing it as weakness rather than understanding it as a spiritual calling. |
