While the basic out-of-body experience and perception of bright light are consistent with biblical accounts of spiritual experiences, the claimed development of telepathic and mind-reading abilities is problematic from a biblical perspective. Scripture distinguishes between spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12) and psychic/occult practices that are forbidden (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Telepathy and mind reading are not listed among the gifts of the Spirit but are often associated with divination and occult practices. The Bible teaches that only God knows the thoughts of man (1 Chronicles 28:9, Psalm 139:2), and attempting to read minds through psychic means would be considered a form of divination. While the OBE itself is neutral, the psychic aftermath moves this experience into territory that conflicts with biblical teaching about appropriate spiritual gifts and practices.
On September 1, 1974, Sabeti had a near-death experience during surgery. After the surgery, while still under the effects of anesthesia or in recovery, he observed his parents and doctor standing around his body, waiting for him to awake. He experienced a clear out-of-body perspective, seeing himself from above his body. The scene was notably bright during this observation. He was completely aware during the experience. Following the NDE, he developed telepathic abilities and mind reading capabilities that he did not possess before. When he initially tried to share the experience with his mother, she did not believe him, which led him to keep the experience private for many years.
