universal salvation, all paths to God, Satan misunderstood
This experience contains significant biblical elements including a direct encounter with Jesus Christ, who is specifically named and whose light bathes the experiencer. The beautiful realm with gardens could correspond to paradise, and the presence of a guiding being aligns with angelic encounters in scripture. The life review and prophetic information about her future also have biblical precedent. However, the experience led to severely unbiblical beliefs that directly contradict core Christian doctrine. The experiencer now believes in universal salvation through "gaining knowledge through enlightenment and truth" rather than through faith in Christ alone. She explicitly states that "it doesn't matter what you believe" and that "everyone can go to heaven" through enlightenment, which directly contradicts Jesus's teaching that He is the way, truth, and life. Her view that Satan is "misunderstood and used as a scapegoat" fundamentally opposes biblical teaching about Satan's nature. Most concerning is her transformation from Protestant Christianity to New Age beliefs that see all religions as equally valid paths to God. While she encountered Jesus in her experience, her interpretation completely diverges from biblical Christianity into universalism and new age philosophy.
Sonya experienced an NDE in October 1998 after suffering 25 stab wounds from her estranged husband, resulting in blood loss, a collapsed lung, and a slow leak in the other lung. While gurgling on blood in her throat, the night sky opened up and she was transported into a peaceful white light that felt like coming home. She saw images of her life around her and crossed into a realm of extraordinary beauty with colorful gardens and a white sky. A female being led her further inside, telling her it was not her time and she had work left to do. The being prophesied that Sonya would survive, have babies, and find a new husband who would love her unconditionally. When Sonya questioned about her work as a massage therapist, the being said she was supposed to do something else that she would recognize when ready, and that she was meant to write despite Sonya's protest about not being creative. The being then asked if Sonya wanted to meet Jesus. Despite questioning her worthiness, she was led by the hand to Him and was bathed in the light radiating from His body. The experience ended with a distressing vision of her estranged husband trying to snap her neck. After this NDE, Sonya's religious views transformed from Protestant Christianity to a more eclectic spiritual path, believing that everyone can reach heaven through gaining knowledge, enlightenment and truth, regardless of religious affiliation.
