Sara J's experience, while containing some elements that could align with biblical accounts, ultimately led her in directions incompatible with Christian orthodoxy. The tunnel of light, out-of-body experience, and life review could parallel biblical concepts, and the voice telling her she had unfinished purpose might reflect divine providence. However, the spiritual interpretation and aftermath raise serious theological concerns.
Most problematic is Sara's conversion from agnosticism to Buddhism following the NDE, directly contradicting Jesus' statement "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6). Her belief in universal oneness and connection contradicts the biblical distinction between Creator and creation. Her statement about pre-mortal existence ("sense that I had always existed") suggests belief in eternal pre-existence of souls or reincarnation, contradicting the biblical teaching that each soul is created by God (Zechariah 12:1). Her practice of meditation to reproduce the NDE experience resembles Eastern mystical practices rather than biblical prayer and communion with God. While she reports that God "does not exist" in the traditional sense after her experience, this denial of a personal God contradicts fundamental biblical theology. The experience led her away from potential Christian faith into Buddhism and new age spirituality.
Sara J was stung by a tropical insect in 1973, triggering a severe allergic reaction that caused her throat to instantly constrict. She fell unconscious before being able to cry out, fortunately in a crowded place where people immediately came to help. She was taken to a medical clinic where she remained in a coma for two days. The doctor later told her that her heart and breathing had stopped twice during this period and that he had almost lost her.
During the experience, Sara found herself located about 10 feet above her body, looking down at herself sprawled on top of a bicycle surrounded by a circle of people. Someone held her hand and asked her to squeeze if she could hear them - she tried with all her might but was unable to respond. She experienced sparkly light and a tunnel with light at the end, feeling an unbelievable sense of peace and of "coming home." Through what seemed like thought transfer or telepathy with a voice she couldn't identify as her own or another entity, her entire life history flashed before her eyes. When she thought of her parents, she immediately felt herself traveling at extreme speed from Mexico back to Canada where they lived. Sara's journey to her parents was interrupted by a strong voice telling her she could not die yet - there was something she had to do in her life first, though it was not specified. She immediately traveled quickly back into her body and woke up, groggy for a few hours before walking out of the clinic. She passed through the tunnel into sparkly light and became the light, experiencing a realm with no time or space that felt like home, where the earthly realm seemed like a dream. The experience profoundly transformed Sara's life. Previously agnostic with no religious beliefs, she became a devout Buddhist and began practicing meditation regularly. She went from greatly fearing death to only slightly fearing it, from having no compassion to being greatly compassionate toward others, and gained certainty about the afterlife and universal oneness. She can now reproduce aspects of the experience in meditation. |
