While the experience contains some biblical elements like consciousness surviving bodily death and transformation through divine light, it includes significant non-biblical concepts. The experiencer explicitly mentions believing in reincarnation, seeing "many different lives that were not my own," and adhering to Hindu and Buddhist beliefs about karma. At age 5, Joshua suffered a severe head injury and was in a coma for 3 days. He awakened in darkness without light, feeling movement like floating down a river. As fear arose, calmness overcame him and he felt he was expanding or stretching rapidly, doubling in size every second. In this timeless state, he experienced multiple memories simultaneously. The darkness turned to dim fog with light coming from within. He was poured toward the light like water into a cup, then went into a sleep state. He awoke 3 days later in the hospital. Doctors said he should have been permanently brain damaged. After the injury, he switched from left to right-handed, has an IQ of 142, and no fear of death.
