This experience transformed an atheist into a believer but introduced problematic theological concepts. While the encounter with a divine being and transformation from atheism represent positive elements, the message that no religion is correct and all paths are equally valid contradicts biblical exclusivity of salvation through Christ. The being's relativistic approach to truth and salvation, suggesting God accepts all approaches equally, opposes scriptural teaching about one way to salvation. The concept of God as "Pure Energy" rather than personal deity, and the emphasis on universal acceptance regardless of belief system, align more with new age universalism than biblical Christianity. Though the experiencer gained faith and compassion, the theological framework received contradicts core Christian doctrines.
A former atheist experienced a profound NDE during emergency surgery for a ruptured fallopian tube with E. coli infection that caused sepsis. She left her body as an "energy ball" from her stomach area, feeling excited to be free of her "meat jacket." She encountered three large energy balls that merged into one brilliant light being. When asked if it was God, the being replied that God was a human word but she could use it. She asked extensive questions about religion, the Bible, Jesus, and sexual orientation, receiving answers to everything. The being told her no single religion was correct and she didn't have to choose. She experienced overwhelming love and wanted to stay "home" but was sent back against her will. The experience transformed her from an atheist who enjoyed "faith shaking" to a believer in God as "Pure Energy." She now feels deep empathy for others' pain, practices prayer, and lives with awareness that love is life's primary purpose. Three years later, she still longs to return home.
