Buddhism, universal oneness, all beings as one consciousness
Kathryn's experience, while profound and transformative, diverges significantly from biblical Christianity. As a practicing Buddhist for over 40 years, her interpretive framework is explicitly non-Christian. Her core understanding that all beings are "part of one Being" who appear separate only to "play out this reality" contradicts biblical teaching about the genuine distinction between Creator and creation, and individual human identity. This pantheistic or panentheistic view, where individual existence is illusory and all consciousness is ultimately one, stands in direct opposition to biblical anthropology and theology, which affirms real individual existence and personal relationship with a transcendent God.
The experience lacks any encounter with the biblical God or Jesus Christ, instead describing an impersonal merging into undifferentiated consciousness. Her quote from Dante's Inferno rather than scripture, combined with Buddhist philosophical interpretation, demonstrates the non-biblical framework. While she mentions "God" once in feeling welcomed home, this appears to be the Buddhist conception of ultimate reality rather than the personal God of Christianity. Her understanding that death is simply rejoining a universal consciousness where individual selves merge contradicts biblical teaching about personal resurrection, individual judgment, and eternal life as distinct persons in relationship with God. The complete absence of biblical themes of sin, redemption, or salvation through Christ, replaced with concepts of universal oneness and reality as "drama" or "false reality," places this experience in the category of low compatibility with biblical Christianity despite its genuinely transformative nature.
Kathryn was walking along a rice paddy terrace in Bali with her family when she slipped and fell backwards, hitting her head on a concrete bridge over an irrigation ditch. She became unconscious and slipped into the water where a 4-foot waterfall pounded into her ear. She was not breathing for at least 3-5 minutes, and witnesses reported her skin turned blue and black from lack of oxygen. Her husband Chris jumped in but couldn't pull her out of the water's force until a young man named Mickey helped rescue her.
On the spiritual plane, while unconscious, Kathryn experienced being welcomed home with golden light, peace, quiet, and joy. She felt happiness at being bodiless and light, merging with all other beings into interconnectedness and non-differentiation. She felt dispassionate about earthly matters, recognizing physical life as mere "drama." She experienced that all beings are part of one Being, not separate but appearing separate to play out physical reality. She understood that finding oneness enables true connections between people, while everything else is "head games and false reality." During the experience, she felt she was meant to continue living for a purpose - to share this understanding with others, make the world more compassionate, let creativity flow through her, and celebrate the oneness of all existence. She understood death as an opportunity to rejoin all Beings in a state of merged individual selves. She experienced no fear, only wonder at this rejoining. The golden light and sense of complete acceptance gave her understanding that love, peace, and connection are the true reality. After being pulled from the water, Kathryn regained consciousness to find everyone crying, thinking she was dead. She was taken to a clinic and then by ambulance to a hospital in Denpasar where she received x-rays, CT scan, and treatment for a ruptured tympanic membrane, bruising, and other injuries. The experience transformed her perspective on death and life's purpose. She lost her fear of death, understanding it as a wonderful rejoining with all Beings. She committed to developing her higher self, connecting with others, working for compassion in the world, and sharing the message that "we are indeed all One." |
