While this experience contains some biblically neutral elements, the aftermath raises significant concerns from a biblical perspective. The tunnel and light experience itself could be interpreted various ways, and the feelings of love and peace are not inherently unbiblical. However, the psychic abilities that developed afterward are highly problematic from a biblical standpoint. The ability to see ghosts contradicts biblical teaching about the state of the dead (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6, Hebrews 9:27). Scripture warns against mediums and those who consult the dead (Leviticus 19:31, Deuteronomy 18:10-12). The premonitions about future deaths and disasters, while not necessarily demonic, represent a form of divination that Scripture generally prohibits outside of God-given prophecy. The child's age and innocence at the time of the experience itself cannot be faulted, but the subsequent development of occult abilities suggests spiritual influences that are not from God according to biblical standards. These paranormal abilities align more with spiritism than with gifts of the Holy Spirit.
On July 4, 1962, Jean's family was at a local lake when the adults paired with younger children who couldn't swim, leaving 4-year-old Jean unpaired. She stepped into the lake and almost immediately sank to the bottom. Rather than distress or need to breathe, she felt incredibly loved and comforted. Looking underwater, she saw twirling water that became a tunnel with a beautiful white light at its end. The light was so beautiful she was drawn to it, feeling love and peace she has never experienced since. When suddenly pulled from the water, she felt great loss and sadness, wanting to return to that comforting feeling. Only after being pulled out did she feel the need to choke and cough up water. The experience left her feeling profoundly different and changed. She reports gaining psychic abilities afterward, including premonitions about deaths and disasters that occur within seven days, and the ability to see ghosts until age thirteen. The experience has remained completely vivid in her memory throughout her life.
