Catherine was in a nightclub when a strobe light triggered a sudden collapse. She lost balance, fell unconscious for about ten minutes, yet remained aware as a different consciousness separate from her everyday persona. In complete terror and resistance, she traveled through a long dark tunnel at lightning speeds, arriving at an infinite space that was simultaneously blindingly white and utterly dark with absolute silence. She observed a nebulous object spinning insanely in the distance, which she understood to be her mind - perceiving it as mutated, deranged, and horrifying. She felt no sense of "Catherine" while in this realm. After what seemed an interminable time in pure fear, she heard an internal voice telling her to choose whether to return or continue, understanding there would be no coming back if she went on. She chose to return, finding it incredibly difficult like wading through half-set concrete. She re-entered her body while choking in the nightclub. She was totally blind for 45 minutes with vision slowly returning over ten hours. Hospital tests found nothing wrong. The terror persisted for days. Years later, she interpreted this as showing we are not our minds, aligning with Buddhist teachings, though the experience lacked the typical bliss and wisdom of most NDEs.
