Anthony's two NDEs contain some biblical elements, including out-of-body experiences, encounters with divine voices, and traveling toward heavenly light. The voice saying "We do not want him here yet" suggests divine sovereignty over life and death. His increased compassion and focus on loving others reflects biblical values. He remains Catholic and believes in God, heaven, and the importance of love. However, Anthony has developed extensive unbiblical theological views that seriously conflict with Scripture. His belief in reincarnation as "guest souls" from purgatory who return to earth multiple times to prove their love for God directly contradicts Hebrews 9:27 ("it is appointed for men to die once, and after this the judgment"). His elaborate system of souls merging, becoming spirits, and returning as guest souls has no biblical basis and resembles Eastern religions more than Christianity. While purgatory is accepted in Catholic doctrine, his specific interpretation involving reincarnation is not. His speculation that Jesus might be a reincarnation of Adam is particularly problematic, contradicting the biblical teaching of Christ's eternal divine nature. His views on telepathic communication between souls and his complex soul/spirit distinction go beyond Scripture into speculative theology. While the experiences themselves may be genuine, his theological interpretations have strayed far from biblical Christianity into syncretistic beliefs incompatible with orthodox Christian doctrine.
Anthony had two NDEs. First at age 4 in 1939 during tonsil surgery: he floated above the operating table at about 20 feet, observing two doctors in grey surgical gowns working on his small body for about a minute before the scene faded. Second in December 1999 during colon cancer surgery when expected to die: he floated in total blackness with no body, feeling completely relaxed with no fear or joy. He became aware of a bright round light in the distance and floated toward it through what seemed like a tunnel. He heard a clear male voice speaking telepathically within him saying "We do not want him here yet. Send him back." He immediately did a U-turn and returned to the blackness. He awoke at 2am to find his wife Betty and neighbor Kevin in his room, both puzzled as they expected him to die. Whatever was causing his death vanished and he was discharged two days later. The voice's use of "yet" indicates to Anthony that he will go to heaven and must not do anything to change their mind. He has since researched NDEs extensively, developing theological views about souls, purgatory, reincarnation as "guest souls," and telepathic communication. He believes loving one another is how we love God, and has become more compassionate and careful about not hurting others.
