Zachary's experience, while profound, presents fundamental incompatibilities with biblical Christianity. His interpretation through an explicitly Buddhist framework includes several concepts directly contradicting scripture. His belief in karma and that "no permanent self or I survives" but rather "khamma and past habitual tendencies will be transmuted into a new life" describes reincarnation, which Hebrews 9:27 refutes: "It is appointed for men to die once, and after this the judgment." His statement "God does not exist" following his experience directly opposes the central biblical truth of God's existence and sovereignty. The beings of "pure consciousness melding together" suggest an impersonal, Eastern view of ultimate reality rather than the personal God of scripture.
While some elements could have biblical parallels - beings communicating about divine timing and purpose for his life - Zachary's wholesale rejection of his Catholic faith for Buddhism and his current practice of jhana meditation seeking "formless realms" indicates embrace of non-Christian spirituality. His comparison of his NDE to the "sixth jhana" (realm of infinite consciousness) frames the entire experience in Buddhist rather than biblical categories. His emphasis on karma determining life circumstances contradicts biblical teaching about God's providence and grace. Though the experience prompted positive life changes like increased compassion, the theological framework and explicit denial of God make this fundamentally incompatible with biblical Christianity. This case illustrates how similar phenomenology can be interpreted through completely different religious lenses.
On Thanksgiving evening 2001, Zachary came home and had some vodka before being suddenly attacked in his living room. He was punched three times in the head while hearing "F*%k You Die" and felt his body being rolled before falling unconscious. His attacker threw him off a third-story balcony. He woke up in the trauma emergency room as a Level 1 trauma victim with morphine and saline drips. After moving to a regular room and flushing out painkillers, he remembered his NDE. He spontaneously appeared without a body in a formless place with beings of pure consciousness melding together. These beings communicated through direct intuition, not thought, conveying that he wasn't supposed to be there yet and needed to go back. When he wondered why, they communicated "Everything will be all right" and showed him through direct knowledge that he was needed on Earth to do something. They revealed the next part of his life up until spring 2013. He experienced extreme equanimity and felt more balanced than ever before. The experience matched the sixth jhana level (realm of infinite consciousness) from his later Buddhist practice. He converted from Catholicism to Buddhism after the experience and gained understanding about karma and the nature of consciousness.
