This childhood NDE contains some elements consistent with biblical accounts but raises significant concerns. The out-of-body experience itself has biblical precedent in Paul's account of being caught up to the third heaven. The tunnel of light could represent a heavenly vision. The lasting impact giving faith and awareness of eternal realities aligns with biblical transformation. However, deeply problematic elements emerge in Steve's subsequent development. His later involvement in astral traveling and self-induced out-of-body experiences directly enters occult territory that scripture condemns. The Bible warns against such practices as they open doors to deception and spiritual danger. His claim that he "translated the Bible from Greek and it is clear we have been lied to" and that "religion is nonsense" shows rejection of biblical authority. While he maintains belief in Christ, he redefines Christ as "just an ordinary person that understood life," denying Christ's divinity. The development of psychic abilities and deliberate pursuit of occult practices makes this experience highly incompatible with biblical Christianity, despite the initial experience occurring to an innocent child.
Five-year-old Steve experienced an NDE during dental work when given an overdose of gas anesthesia. After the gas was administered, instead of simply waking up as usual, he rose up in the air and observed his body from above. He witnessed two dentists, Dr. Godwin and his assistant, frantically working on his body and pumping a bellows, likely performing CPR. However, his attention was drawn to a phenomenon near the window - a spinning white light accompanied by a rhythmic throbbing sound going "wob, wob, wob" at one-second intervals. The light consisted of white and black spirals like a hypnotist's wheel, possibly a spinning tunnel. After the experience, he was told he could never have gas again, and his mother never returned to that dentist. Years later, his mother confirmed there had been difficulty reviving him. Steve believes this childhood NDE changed him fundamentally, giving him faith during difficult times and awareness of something higher than mundane existence. At age 21, he had a second, stronger self-induced experience that he considers was only possible because of this first NDE. The childhood experience left him with lasting knowledge that there is definitely life after death.
