While this experience contains some biblical elements such as a beautiful paradise-like realm and deceased relatives in a peaceful afterlife, it includes significant non-biblical teachings. The claim that "Hell wasn't there, but heaven was. Everyone will go only to heaven" directly contradicts biblical teaching about judgment and hell. The experiencer's background with occult practices (Ouija board, Wicca, Voodoo) raises concerns about spiritual deception, though she expressed surprise at reaching heaven despite this history.
The healing aspect - perfect hearing during the NDE despite deafness - could reflect divine healing power. The forgiveness expressed by the kamikaze pilot uncles shows redemption themes. However, the universal salvation doctrine and denial of hell's existence are fundamentally incompatible with biblical Christianity. The experience led to increased belief in God's existence but maintained non-Christian theological views. While some elements like the paradise garden and family reunion are consistent with certain biblical imagery, the core theological message contradicts orthodox Christian doctrine.
In October 1993, Mayumi experienced a heart attack in a taxi cab with her girlfriend, hearing "I'm dead" before falling unconscious. During her clinical death requiring CPR and resuscitation, she had a profound near-death experience that began with seeing a light resembling the moon shining down on her. Her body floated slowly upward toward the light, high in the air, before entering through what appeared to be a tunnel.
Upon passing through the light, she was greeted by an extraordinary garden filled with yellow flowers beneath a pink sunset-colored sky. Everything was warm, fragrant, and deeply beautiful, creating an overwhelming sense of safety and emotional movement. She felt a gentle wind and experienced the sensation of walking along stony streets while touching numerous flowers. She arrived at a small Japanese-style country house where her two uncles welcomed her from the first-floor balcony. They shared beer together, laughing, before one uncle told her she had to return because her father was waiting for her. Suddenly feeling pulled backward by her shoulders, she found herself hovering above her body in the hospital, watching a nurse and doctor using electronic shock paddles on her chest. She then awakened in the hospital bed. The experience was particularly significant as Mayumi is hearing impaired but experienced perfect hearing during the NDE, including beautiful classical music. Her uncles, who had died as kamikaze pilots in World War II, communicated telepathically and expressed forgiveness toward America, saying they were happy in the afterlife. Her father later believed her account when she accurately described her uncles' appearance and mannerisms. |
