Buddhist conversion, rejection of God
Experience led to rejection of Christian faith and conversion to Buddhism. The experiencer explicitly states he no longer believes in God and interprets his experience through a Buddhist framework of consciousness existing between bodies. No biblical elements were encountered during the NDE itself. The outcome directly contradicts biblical teaching about the necessity of faith in God.
In June 1998, John-Paul K experienced severe clinical depression from Valium withdrawal that led to a suicide attempt via flecainide overdose. He was without pulse or respiration for approximately 80 minutes while receiving CPR. Emergency surgery was performed to insert cannulae for cardiac bypass, followed by 14 days in intensive care. During his cardiac arrest, he experienced a cessation of pain and physical sensation, with time appearing to stand still. His visual focus split into two images like looking into two mirrors. He felt calm and still in this state. He recalls being told he had suffered cardiac arrest and waking up with his mother holding his hand in the ICU. The experience was unlike typical NDEs - no tunnel, deceased beings, or light reported, just a profound stillness and altered perception.
