Elena was taken unconscious to the hospital at age twelve with an undisclosed illness that brought her near death, later confirmed by the doctor. She awoke in a coma finding herself in a corner of the ceiling looking down at her body in bed and a nurse attempting to adjust her IV. The nurse bungled the IV insertion due to Elena's difficult veins and accidentally stuck the needle in her own upper arm. While hovering above, Elena was joined by an older, thin man standing behind a podium making notes in a ledger. She could not read his thoughts unless he chose to let her, though he could read all of hers completely. He communicated telepathically that earthly experience is but a flash though it seems long, serving as a means to evolve. He explained that tragedy is overly stressed and is only a vessel for evolving. When he asked "Do you have any choice?" she understood he meant whether she wanted to live or die. Filled with joy and peace, she felt indifferent since time was nothing, but thought briefly of her parents' grief. She then woke in her body with the nurse now wearing long sleeves. When she told the nurse about seeing the IV incident, the nurse showed her a Band-Aid where the needle had pricked her but dismissed it as hallucination. Elena was in a coma for nearly a month according to her stepmother. After the experience, she began seeing and hearing ghosts and could no longer wear wristwatches as they would stop working, a phenomenon that lasted about fifty years.
