This experience contains both biblical and deeply problematic elements from a conservative evangelical perspective. The positive biblical aspects include the out-of-body experience consistent with Paul's description of being caught up to the third heaven, the encounter with divine light that could represent God's presence, and the message that it wasn't her time, which aligns with the biblical concept of appointed times for death (Ecclesiastes 3:2). The overwhelming joy experienced in the light's presence resonates with biblical descriptions of the joy found in God's presence, as stated in Psalm 16:11, "In your presence there is fullness of joy." The transformative nature of the experience and its lasting spiritual impact parallel biblical accounts of divine encounters.
However, the experience contains seriously problematic elements that directly contradict scripture. Most concerning is her development of mediumistic abilities - channeling spirits, receiving messages from the dead, and helping spirits "transition." These practices are explicitly forbidden in scripture, particularly in Deuteronomy 18:10-12 which condemns those who consult the dead as "detestable to the Lord." Leviticus 19:31 warns against mediums and spiritists, stating they will defile those who seek them. Her Unity church background represents a non-Christian metaphysical tradition that denies core Christian doctrines. The ongoing paranormal activity (electronic interference) and spirit visitations suggest continued involvement with spiritual forces that, from a biblical perspective, would be demonic deceptions rather than legitimate spirits of the dead, as scripture teaches the dead cannot communicate with the living (Luke 16:19-31). These elements make this experience highly problematic despite its initial biblical appearance.
In fall 1971, at age 15, Dani attempted suicide by consuming a large amount of pills and alcohol. When she came to consciousness, she found herself floating above her body, initially experiencing a neutral feeling in darkness. She began ascending toward light and felt overwhelming joy - though she noted that word doesn't do justice to what she was experiencing. The feeling was far beyond earthly joy or happiness.
During her ascent toward the light, she heard a voice and sensed a presence telling her to go back, that it wasn't her time. She remembers feeling sad about having to return. She has no conscious memory of re-entering her body. She awoke the next day ill from the poisonous effects of the overdose. Though young when it happened, she was already studying metaphysics through Unity church and may have had some awareness of such experiences. The experience had lasting effects on her spiritual development. Her sixth sense became more acute after the NDE. She began experiencing visits from spirits having difficulty transitioning who asked her to communicate messages to loved ones still on earth. She occasionally channels messages from the other side. Electronics behave erratically around her - watches don't run properly and she shorts out car radios.
