He felt overwhelming disappointment, fully conscious and thinking "What happened? I've been cheated. What was the purpose of life? Where are my parents? Where is the tunnel? Where is God?" The experience was one of complete meaninglessness and eternal emptiness. When rescuers began touching him, the light changed from blood-red to orange, and he heard voices calling his name in Portuguese before being pulled back. He spent four days hospitalized and developed a lasting phobia of open spaces and blank walls that recreate the crushing nothingness feeling.
