Six-year-old Philippe was at his relatives' home in Toulon during summer holidays. While trying to swim in the pool, he slipped from the last step and was immediately driven to the bottom, sliding down the slope to the middle of the pool. He then "swiveled" without having actual shape and entered what he describes as being "into a white color" - bathing in white in a state of supreme serenity, total perfection and fullness where time didn't exist. This seemed to last ages though time was suspended. The white briefly dissolved into red-orange like a sunset before he suddenly returned to his body underwater. He heard a strong noise and saw someone diving toward him who lifted him by his armpits. His mother's cousin had seen him at the bottom, initially thinking he could swim, but after alerting the parents who confirmed he couldn't swim, rushed back to rescue him.
