Chapter 22
Marsh asks what looks like a simple question. If millions of people really visited the afterlife, why don’t their reports all line up? Same gates, same streets, same details? Instead, the reports vary — sometimes a lot. So, he concludes, they must be brain-state phenomena. Stories the brain tells, not places the soul has been.1
It’s a clean argument. It’s also a strange one. Strange because, when you stop and think about it, no real experience produces identical reports. Not one. And the consistency that is there in the NDE record turns out to be remarkable, not ordinary.
In this chapter, I’ll lay out Marsh’s argument in his own words, expose what it quietly assumes, and then look at the evidence — what NDEs actually share, what they don’t, and why the pattern looks much more like real perception than like brain noise.
Marsh makes the case clearly in his preface. Reports of the afterlife, he says, run the gamut. People describe heaven differently. They describe judgment differently. Some hurtle through tunnels; some don’t. Others find themselves in gardens or fields or hospital corridors. If these were real perceptions of a real place, he argues, the place ought to look the same to everyone who arrives there. Since it doesn’t, something must be off.2
He sharpens the point with a historical comparison. Take Drycthelm — the seventh-century Northumbrian whose vision of heaven and hell was recorded by the Venerable Bede.3 Drycthelm’s account is full of medieval imagery: pits of fire, freezing valleys, a lord of the world to come. Modern reports, by contrast, are full of bright lights, life reviews, and deceased loved ones. “Unless my conclusions are invalid,” Marsh writes, we should expect all reports to be reasonably uniform within any one time and place. They aren’t. So the source must be the brain, not the beyond.4
Marsh extends the same logic to the famous “tunnel” feature. Different experiencers describe their tunnels differently — some bright, some dark, some narrow, some wide. He calls this idiosyncratic, tied to each person’s own perception. A real tunnel, he says, would have geographic coordinates. This one doesn’t. So it can’t be real, and the perception “is entirely dependent on hallucinatory brain activity.”5
Behind the argument runs an unspoken commitment. Real things look the same to everyone. Brain-generated things look different to everyone. Find variability, and you’ve found a brain product. It’s a tidy criterion. It’s also a philosophical claim hiding inside what looks like a scientific one. Marsh never quite states it as a premise. He just runs the inference. Spot the differences. Conclude the brain.
Fischer and Mitchell-Yellin make a related move from the other direction. They concede the worldwide consistency of core NDE features but explain it biologically: similar brains in similar circumstances should produce similar experiences. So the consistency that does exist, they say, doesn’t prove anything supernatural either.6 Between the two arguments, the skeptic gets to say: variability is fatal, and consistency is biological. Heads I win; tails you lose. We’ll come back to that.
Notice what Marsh is really doing here. He sets up a standard that no real human experience could meet — word-for-word uniformity across cultures and centuries — and then treats failure to meet that standard as evidence against reality. That’s a high bar set in the wrong place. It’s also a bar he doesn’t apply to other domains. Ten witnesses to a real car accident do not produce ten identical reports. Ten travelers who’ve been to the same Tibetan monastery do not produce ten identical reports. A whole field of professional historiography exists precisely because eyewitnesses to the same events disagree about details. Marsh would not say that the car accident never happened, or that the monastery doesn’t exist, or that the events of history are imaginary. The standard he applies to NDEs is one he’d never apply elsewhere.
Three problems sink Marsh’s argument. Take them one at a time.
The first is the hidden expectation. What would “identical” reports actually look like? Same word choices? Same details, in the same order, with the same length? Pause and ask: does any real human experience produce that? Sit two strangers next to each other at a baseball game. Five minutes in, ask each one what just happened. You’ll get two different stories. Same field, same ball, same crowd — different stories. That’s how perception works.7
Key Argument. Identical reports would be a red flag, not a green one. Real eyewitnesses to real events never agree on every detail. They agree on the core and differ on the edges. That’s exactly what NDE reports do.
Detectives know this. When two witnesses give the same account word for word, the assumption is collusion or coaching, not unusual reliability. Real eyewitnesses agree on the core, disagree on the periphery, and remember different angles of the same event. Marsh’s test — if it’s real, the reports should match — gets reality exactly backwards.
The second problem is selective focus. Marsh emphasizes the variability and walks past the consistency. But the consistency is striking. Across thousands of cases — different cultures, different ages, different religions, different medical events — researchers find a recognizable core: leaving the body, a sense of peace, an encounter with light, deceased relatives, a boundary, a return. We’ll look at the data shortly. The point right now is just that you can’t run an argument from variability without first weighing what isn’t variable. Marsh weighs only one side of the scale.
The third problem is the Drycthelm comparison itself. Marsh asks why a seventh-century Northumbrian saw a fiery valley while a 21st-century American saw a tunnel of light. But that comparison was never going to work the way he wants. Two different cultures. Two different languages. Two different cosmologies. Fifteen centuries apart. And the experiences are reported through what each person knows. The wonder isn’t that the imagery differs. The wonder is that, despite all that distance, both reports describe leaving the body, encountering the dead, facing some kind of judgment, and being sent back. That’s striking convergence, not damning divergence. Chapter 8 covers the cross-cultural data more fully.
The “idiosyncratic tunnel” argument has the same shape. Marsh treats different tunnel descriptions as proof that no real tunnel exists. But every real-world transition gets described differently by different perceivers. Ten people walk through the same airport. Ask each one to describe it. You’ll get ten different descriptions. None of them prove the airport doesn’t exist. They prove that travelers see different things from different angles — which is exactly what real travelers do.
So what does the NDE record really look like? It looks like a phenomenon with a stable core and culturally varied dressing. That isn’t the pattern of brain-generated noise. It’s the pattern of real perception filtered through individual minds.
Start with Jeffrey Long. Long is a radiation oncologist who has spent more than two decades collecting NDE accounts through the Near Death Experience Research Foundation, where over four thousand cases have been submitted. From this enormous pool he and his team identified twelve common elements: an out-of-body experience, heightened senses, intense positive emotions, passing through a tunnel, encountering a brilliant light, encountering deceased relatives or beings, an alteration of time and space, a life review, otherworldly realms, special knowledge, a boundary, and a return.8 Not every NDE has all twelve. But these twelve recur across thousands of reports — in adults and children, atheists and believers, Westerners and non-Westerners. They tend to occur in consistent order. That isn’t what we’d expect from random brain misfire.
Add Bruce Greyson’s consistency study. Greyson re-interviewed 72 NDErs about two decades after their first interview. Confabulated memories degrade over time. They get embellished, edited, reshaped. Greyson’s NDErs — the same 72 people, twenty years later — gave essentially the same accounts. He concluded that NDE reports were “not embellished over a period of almost two decades.”9 In other words, NDE accounts are not just consistent across people; they’re consistent across years inside the same person. Chapter 18 owns the full memory-and-confabulation discussion. The point here is simpler: NDEs aren’t a stream of shifting fictions. They’re stable.
Now compare with dreams. Michael Sabom said it well: dream content varies wildly from person to person and from night to night.10 Five people who fall asleep agitated will dream five different things. By contrast, NDEs across thousands of cases share a recognizable architecture. We don’t see this with dreams. We don’t see it with hallucinations either. As Chris Carter notes, hallucinations “are highly idiosyncratic and varied,” their content “determined largely by set (expectations and attitudes) and setting (physical and psychological environments).”11 NDEs aren’t. NDEs are stubbornly the same shape, in cases where the “set” and “setting” are wildly different.
Then there’s the strangest part. The consistent features tend to be the ones nobody would think to invent. People speak of mind-to-mind communication, where words aren’t spoken but somehow understood. They speak of light without squinting — a bright source you can stare into without flinching. They speak of seeing an entire life in what feels like an instant. They speak of time and space dissolving. They speak of being able to see in every direction at once. None of that is what cultural training tells a Western Christian to expect. None of it is what a child reading Sunday school books pictures. Yet it shows up over and over again, in case after case.12
An Insight. Real things produce reports that share a stable core and differ in detail. Imagined things produce reports that share their dressing and differ in core. NDEs match the first pattern, not the second.
Expectation theory predicts the opposite of what we find. If NDE content were shaped by what experiencers expected, we’d see Western Christians filing through pearly gates and Hindus arriving in lavish palaces. Sometimes elements like that show up. But more often the unexpected features show up. And the unexpected features cluster across cases. Mind-to-mind speech keeps appearing. The painless light keeps appearing. The instantaneous life review keeps appearing. Penny Sartori, in her prospective ICU study in Wales, found that none of her patients with deep NDEs reported any prior familiarity with NDE literature.13 They weren’t fitting their experiences to a known template. The consistency came through anyway.
Maurice Rawlings, a cardiologist who interviewed many resuscitated patients, captured the strangeness in plain words: “The remarkable repetitive sequence of events and parallel experiences in completely unrelated cases seem to exclude the possibility of any coincidence or connecting circumstances during this out-of-the-body existence.”14 Rawlings was looking at people who didn’t know each other, in different settings, with different conditions and different beliefs. They kept reporting the same odd architecture.
Take a quick concrete pair. Pim van Lommel’s “dentures man” case from the Netherlands and Maria’s tennis-shoe case from Seattle have basically nothing in common at the surface level. Different countries. Different decades. Different medical events. Different ages. One man, one woman. One Dutch, one American. The cultural “dressing” of their experiences differs. The settings differ. The hospital teams differ. But underneath, both share the recognizable NDE core: separation from the body, an elevated vantage point, accurate perception of details that the patient could not have known by ordinary means, and a sense of being elsewhere yet still “present.”19 Chapter 4 develops both cases fully. The point here is just the pattern. Vary almost everything else, and the core stays put. That isn’t how brain noise behaves. That’s how reports of a real referent behave.
Even the “tunnel” Marsh dismisses turns out, on closer look, to be a recognizable feature with stable core characteristics. Different colors? Yes. Different durations? Yes. Different speeds? Yes. But across thousands of cases people consistently report a sense of moving through some kind of confined passage from one place to another — typically toward a light, typically with a sense of acceleration, typically without panic. The variations Marsh seizes on are the variations any real experience would have. The core is there.
Children’s NDEs deepen the point. Melvin Morse, who studied children’s NDEs for years, observed that — unlike ordinary memories or dreams — children’s NDEs “do not seem to be rearranged or altered over time.”15 Young children, with little exposure to NDE literature or cultural scripts, report the same core features adults report. Pim van Lommel, summarizing his Dutch hospital study, noted that age, sex, race, education, occupation, religious background, and even prior knowledge of NDEs did not predict whether someone would have one or what it would contain.16 If consistency were a function of expectation, those variables should matter. They don’t.
So what does the overall pattern look like? It looks like real perception. Not because every report matches every other word for word. Because the reports show what real perception always shows: a stable core surrounded by variable detail. The dressing varies. The thing being dressed is the same.
Two pushbacks deserve honest engagement.
Pushback one: even granting some consistency, the differences are still hard to explain. If heaven is a single place, shouldn’t its details be more uniform across reports? This is Marsh’s original argument with a softer edge, and the reply is the same. Real travelers to real places give different accounts. Ask ten visitors to describe Paris. They’ll mention different streets, different museums, different cafés. Some came in summer; some in winter. Some saw the Louvre; some saw Montmartre. None of these differences threaten the existence of Paris. They just show that real travelers see different things from different angles. NDErs report what they encountered from where they were — which is exactly what real witnesses do.
Pushback two, from Fischer and Mitchell-Yellin: maybe the consistency just reflects the consistency of human brains. Their move is sharper. Grant the worldwide pattern, then explain it biologically. Similar brains in similar circumstances should produce similar experiences. We don’t need a real other-realm to account for the data; we just need similar neurology.17
It’s a clever explanation. But it doesn’t bear weight. Three problems. First, NDEs frequently contradict their experiencers’ expectations — atheists who didn’t expect anything report deep, structured experiences; lifelong Christians meet figures they didn’t expect to meet, or are surprised by what they find missing. If similar brains were producing the experiences, we’d expect each brain to produce something matching its pre-loaded culture. They often don’t. Chapter 20 handles this fully. Second, biological similarity can’t explain veridical perception — patients accurately reporting events in other rooms during cardiac arrest, or congenitally blind people describing visual details. Similar brains can’t see what no eye has seen.18 Third, biological similarity can’t explain the unexpected features. Why would similar brains, all over the world, produce light without squinting, mind-to-mind speech, and time dissolution — in patterns that exceed individual cultural training? These features don’t sit naturally in any neural model.
Marsh’s question was a fair one to start with. Why aren’t all NDEs identical? The honest answer is: because real perception is never identical between persons, but real perception of a real referent does produce a recognizable core. That’s exactly what NDE research has documented across decades and across continents. The variability Marsh treats as fatal is just the ordinary signature of real experience. The consistency he underweights is the data that needs explaining. Brain-state explanations, as we’ll keep seeing in chapter after chapter, can’t carry that weight.
Step back, and the consistency objection collapses into something close to its opposite. The pattern of NDE reports is not the pattern of brain noise. Brain noise is wild, idiosyncratic, and shaped by individual setting and expectation. The NDE record is the reverse: a stable architecture that survives across cultures, languages, ages, religions, prior beliefs, and decades of recall. Within that stable architecture, individual reports differ in detail. That’s how reality works. We should expect nothing else.
If anything, the variability Marsh complains about is a sign that the field is doing something honest. Researchers aren’t scrubbing the data to fit a tidy template. They aren’t coaching witnesses. They aren’t suppressing inconvenient detail. They’re recording what people actually say. And what people actually say, across all that variety, keeps converging on the same core. The reader can decide whether that pattern looks more like noise from a misfiring brain — or more like reports from real witnesses who saw something real. I think the answer is clear. And in the chapters ahead, we’ll see that the same answer keeps returning, no matter which skeptical objection we examine.
