I stood at the tactical display, Tiffany beside me with her hands already tracing spatial equations in the air — her gift reading the fold-architecture ahead the way Ammi read Old Tally, fluently and with the kind of attention that left no room for error. Sur Kaan's holo-presence occupied the left flank of the display, his formation markers holding position at the corridor's mouth. Vasquez's flag, somewhere out among the covenant's combined order of battle, showed as steady amber on the scope.

"Define 'not what we expected,'" I said.

"The ward-array does not conform to the architecture we encountered at the Threshold Stars or during the outrider engagements," Gabriel said. "Those were defensive lines — walls, essentially. This is a labyrinth. The corridors between the array's nodes are grav-sheared: vertical and lateral gravitational differentials at approximately eight hundred times standard, alternating on a rotational cycle. Anything transiting at conventional speed will be torn apart. Anything transiting at high speed will hit a fold-trap — a spatial recursion loop that sends the vessel back to where it entered, at increased velocity, into the grav-shear it just tried to pass through. The lattice connecting the nodes appears to be adaptive. It learns."

The flag deck went very quiet.

"How many arrays?" I asked.

"Seven. Concentric. Each larger and more complex than the last. Total garrison strength approximately fifteen thousand hulls, distributed across the arrays in fortified nodes." Gabriel paused — one of his meaningful pauses, the kind that said the next sentence was going to land with weight. "The corridor layout between arrays also shifts. The lattice is not static geometry. It is elder mathematics, actively managed, and it is very old and very practiced at what it does."

I looked at Tiffany. She was staring at the display, her blue eyes bright and very focused, her hands still in the air where the spatial equations hung like architect's notes on a structure only she could fully read. She wasn't afraid. She was concentrating the way she concentrated when a problem was genuinely interesting and genuinely difficult and the answer mattered more than abstract curiosity.

"I can see it," she said. "The math is — it's layered. Like counterpoint in music. Each array operates on its own frequency, but they're tuned to reinforce each other. Break one pattern and the others compensate. Break two and the third adapts before you can exploit the gap." She turned to me. "Gabriel and I can unweave it. But we have to do it in real time, array by array, while the fleet is moving through. And the fleet has to move through the corridors I clear, exactly as I clear them, because the safe path will close behind us. There's no margin."

"How long?"

"For all seven?" She calculated, her mind doing the thing her mind did — running spatial topology the way other people ran simple arithmetic. "Hours. Many hours. Depending on how fast the lattice adapts to what I'm doing."

"Sur Kaan," I said.

His voice came through clean. "I heard. My fleets will hold the seams. When your wife opens a corridor, my ships will anchor the edges to keep it open behind the main body. We have drilled this." A pause, military and measured. "The geometry is hostile. The principle is not new. We held the Threshold Stars against worse odds."

"You held the Threshold Stars against fire," I said. "This is space itself trying to kill you."

"Then we will hold the seams of space itself," Sur Kaan said, and the calm in his voice was the real thing — the kind that came from having fought beside this fleet through the Threshold Stars and the outriders and the crossing of the Long Dark and every engagement since the day he'd put his crown down on a table and picked up a sword. "With your permission, I will deploy screening elements along the first corridor's boundary as soon as your wife identifies it."

I looked at Tiffany again. She nodded.

"Do it," I said. Then I turned to the fleet-wide channel. "All ships, this is Matthew. The Vault's inner ward-arrays are in scanning range. Seven concentric rings of hostile geometry — grav-shear corridors, fold-traps, adaptive lattice — standing between us and the holds. We will thread them one at a time. Tiffany and Gabriel will chart the path. Sur Kaan's fleets will hold the seams. Sarah's barriers will shield the column. Every ship follows the cleared corridor exactly. There is no margin for deviation." I paused. "We also know there are Bondborn garrison crews in those arrays — people who were bred into service, the same as the ones we freed at Ienna and the Threshold Stars and every position since. The offer goes out first, every array. Ammi's voice, in the Old Tally. The oldest language, the one they were raised in. Mercy offered. Every time."

I closed the channel and looked at the display. Seven concentric rings of elder mathematics, fifteen thousand warships, and a lattice that learned. Behind us, the Long Dark we had crossed. Ahead, the Vault — the construct-fastness where the Vaulted slept between wakings, where the sleeper-holds lay beneath the deepest floor, where centuries of the taken waited in preservation rows for a rescue that had taken two hundred years to arrive.

Lord, the moat behind the moat. The last miles. They built this to stop anyone who was not supposed to come, and we were not supposed to come, and we are here anyway. Guide Tiffany's hands. Steady Gabriel's calculations. Hold Sur Kaan's seams. Let the offer reach every ear that can hear it, and bring every one of those Bondborn crews home if they'll come. And the ones who won't — the ward-masters who refuse — give me the strength to end what has to end quickly enough that nobody dies who doesn't have to.

"Ammi," I said, opening the channel to the loresinger's ship — a small vessel tucked in the fleet's center, near the Bethesda, carrying the woman whose songs had given the Reckoning its name and the covenant its oldest memory. "First array. Are you ready?"

Her voice came through the way it always did — small and ancient and carrying more weight than most battle fleets. "I have been ready since my grandmother sang me the first lament, Matthew. Open the channel. I will sing them home, or I will sing them goodbye."

I opened the fleet's hailers to her, and Ammi's voice went out into the dark — the Old Tally, the elder tongue, the language of the people who had built this labyrinth and garrisoned it and slept in the construct beyond it — and the words she sang were not a battle cry. They were an offer. Come home. Put down the warden's rod. The tribute is finished. The Reckoning is done. Come home.

The first array lit up on the display — active, hostile, and waiting.

"Tiffany," I said. "Show us the way."

That was the first thing I thought, and I was not ashamed of it, because it was true. The elder space-mathematics of the first ward-array was the most elegant hostile architecture I had ever encountered — layers of gravitational manipulation woven together like a tapestry, each thread reinforcing every other, the whole structure humming with the kind of precision that came from centuries of refinement by minds that had understood spatial topology at a level most civilizations never reached.

It was also trying to kill us.

"Gabriel," I said. "The recursion loops — they're not random. They follow a pattern based on the approaching mass's velocity and trajectory. If I can map the pattern's seed function, I can predict the loop's endpoint before it forms and open a counter-fold in the gap."

"The seed function appears to be derived from a twelve-dimensional manifold," Gabriel said. "I have isolated eight dimensions. The remaining four are — unusual."

"Unusual how?"

"They appear to incorporate temporal harmonics. The lattice is not merely reading the present state of an approaching object. It is predicting the object's future state based on its current trajectory, velocity, and acceleration profile, and pre-positioning the fold-trap at the predicted intersection point." Gabriel paused, and the pause carried the particular flavor of an intelligence that had been running calculations for two hundred years and had just encountered something that genuinely surprised him. "The lattice is not reacting to us. It is anticipating us."

I stared at the equations my gift was drawing in the air — the spatial structure of the corridor ahead, the gravitational contours, the fold-trap probability zones. The lattice's temporal harmonics showed up as a shimmer in the topology, a slight wrongness in the expected fold-patterns, as if space itself were leaning forward to see what was coming.

"That will slow the fleet's transit to approximately one-quarter standard cruising speed," Gabriel said.

"Better slow and alive than fast and recursive."

"Agreed." He relayed the instruction to the formation, and I felt the fleet shift — a thousand Titans and the covenant's combined order of battle adjusting their drive profiles from smooth ballistic to a kind of controlled drift, each ship's course a constantly shifting series of micro-corrections that made the lattice's predictive function chase a target that kept refusing to exist in the future it was trying to read.

His ships moved with the precise discipline that had made him the covenant's fleet commander. Destroyers positioned along the corridor's edges, their shield arrays extending laterally to brace the gap I'd opened, turning my momentary seam into a stable passage. The lattice pressed against them — gravitational shear grinding on their hulls like a current trying to close a cut — and they held.

"The corridor is stable," Sur Kaan said. "Duration uncertain. The lattice is applying increasing pressure."

"Sarah," I said. "The column."

Sarah's voice came back calm, steady, carrying the particular warmth of a woman who had been making people safe since before any of us had met her, and whose gift had been making fleets safe since the day it reached full strength. "Barriers are up. Full formation coverage. Nobody drifts."

I could feel them — Sarah's protective fields wrapping the lead elements of the column like armor made of intention, each barrier tuned to the specific gravitational frequency of the corridor I'd opened, deflecting the shear forces that leaked through the anchored seams. The Titans entered the corridor in single file, their massive forms threading the gap like ships through a needle's eye, and Sarah's barriers held each one in the center of the safe zone with the precision of a woman who had spent her whole life counting her people and making sure none of them got lost.

The lattice shifted. I felt it before Gabriel reported it — a change in the topology ahead, the second array's outer nodes adjusting their gravitational output to compensate for the breach in the first. The corridor I'd opened began to narrow.

"The lattice is learning," Gabriel confirmed. "It has identified the corridor's location and is rerouting grav-shear resources from adjacent nodes to compress the opening."

"I see it." I was already working — my hands drawing new equations in the air, my gift unweaving the lattice's adaptation before it could close what I'd opened. The math was a conversation now, the lattice and I trading moves like players in a game whose rules kept changing because one of us kept writing new ones. It wrote a compression algorithm. I found the algorithm's symmetry point and folded it back on itself. It detected the fold and rerouted through an asymmetric path. I mapped the asymmetry and opened a second corridor where the rerouted forces left a gap.

Gabriel was with me every step — his processing power and my spatial intuition working together the way they had worked together since the first day I'd stood at a navigation console and realized that the ship's mind thought in the same shapes I did, just faster and with more decimal places. Where I saw the topology's pattern, he calculated its exact parameters. Where I felt the lattice's intent, he ran the numbers that told me exactly how much force I needed to counter it.

"Ammi's hailer broadcast is reaching the first array's garrison nodes," Gabriel said, between calculations. "I am reading — activity. Some of it hostile. Some of it not."

I split my attention — one hand holding the corridor, the other monitoring the garrison nodes on the tactical display. The first array held approximately two thousand warships in fortified positions along the lattice's structural points. Some of them were powering weapons. And some of them — I watched the display carefully — were powering down.

"Bondborn divisions," Gabriel said. "Three garrisons on the outer ring are striking colors. They are broadcasting on an open channel." He paused. "In Old Tally."

On the hailers, Ammi's song continued — the offer, the oldest language, the promise that the tribute was done and the rod could be put down. And in the dark, in the fortified nodes of a lattice designed to kill anything that tried to pass through it, whole divisions of the bred-to-serve were hearing the language of their masters used for the first time in eight hundred years to tell them they could stop.

"Receiving flotillas to the striking garrisons," Matthew's voice said on the command channel. "Rowan — coordinate reception. Lead with soup."

I smiled despite the math trying to eat me alive. Lead with soup. Rowan had said that months ago, about receiving surrendering Bondborn, and it had become a standing order, and it worked every time, and the reason it worked was the simplest thing in the universe: someone who had been bred to serve and had never been served was being handed a bowl by someone who meant it, and the bowl was worth more than every gun in the fleet.

The lattice adapted again. I went back to unweaving.


Three hours in. Three arrays threaded. The fleet had traversed roughly half the distance from the outermost ring to the Vault's main structure, and the lattice was getting harder.

"The fourth array's topology is different," I told Matthew. "The first three were variations on the same architecture — grav-shear corridors with fold-trap backstops. This one uses something I haven't seen before. The corridors themselves are the trap. The gravitational differential isn't between the corridor walls. It's inside the corridor, moving with anything that enters it — a shear envelope that wraps the transiting object and applies torque on all three axes simultaneously. The faster you go, the harder it wraps."

"Can you unwrap it?"

"I can fold space around it — create a pocket where the shear envelope can't form. But I have to do it for every ship individually. The pocket collapses the moment the ship exits it, and the lattice closes the gap before the next ship can enter." I wiped sweat from my forehead. My gift had been running at full output for three hours, and the sustained effort of holding corridors open against an adaptive lattice while simultaneously computing counter-folds in real time was the hardest thing I had ever done with it. Not the most dangerous — the Threshold Stars had been more dangerous — but the most complex, the most demanding of precision and sustained concentration. "Gabriel and I can automate the pocket-formation for the smaller ships. The Titans — their mass is too great. I have to fold each one through individually."

"How long per Titan?"

"About forty seconds."

Matthew did the arithmetic. A thousand Titans at forty seconds each. Plus the covenant's combined fleet, which added thousands more hulls. Plus the pauses for the lattice to re-stabilize between folds, which added — I didn't want to think about how much they added.

"There's a faster way," I said, because there was. I could feel it in the topology — a structural weakness in the fourth array's architecture, a node where the lattice's power feeds converged, a single point that, if I could reach it and fold it back on itself, would collapse the entire array's shear-envelope capability in one stroke. The problem was the node was inside the array, behind the very defenses it powered, and reaching it required threading a ship through the unmodified lattice — through the grav-shear corridors and the fold-traps and the shear envelopes — to get close enough for my gift to touch the convergence point.

"One ship," I said. "Small, fast, with my gift and Gabriel's calculations and a very steady pilot." I paused. "Me."

Matthew looked at me for a long moment. I knew what he was seeing — his wife, sweat-sheened and running on sustained concentration and asking to fly a small craft through hostile elder geometry that was designed to tear apart anything that entered it. I also knew he was seeing what I was seeing: the math, clear and certain, the path through the lattice that existed because no architecture was perfect, and this one had a flaw that only someone who could read spatial topology the way I read it would ever find.

"Not alone," he said.

"Sarah for the shielding," I said immediately, because I had already thought it through. "Her barriers can wrap the shuttle at close range. Rachel for the punch — if we need to knock a node offline, she's the only one who can hit hard enough to matter without destroying the lattice structure around it. And a Destroyer escort to hold the corridor's mouth while we're inside."

"Gabriel?"

"The path exists," Gabriel confirmed. "The probability of successful threading is approximately eighty-seven percent with Tiffany's gift at optimal output. With Sarah's barriers reducing the shear load and Rachel's capability providing a kinetic option at the convergence node, the probability rises to approximately ninety-three percent." Another of his pauses. "I will ride with them. Shuttle-mind link. My calculations in her ears without relay delay."

Matthew closed his eyes for a moment. I felt the binding — his fear, real and honest and completely under control; his trust, just as real; his pride in me, fierce and warm and the thing I would take with me into the lattice the way I took his ring and his bracelet and the knowledge that he loved me. He opened his eyes.

"Go," he said. "All three of you. And come back."

"Always," I said. I kissed him — quick and hard, because there wasn't time for slow and because the math was urgent and because sometimes the kiss that said everything was the one that lasted two seconds and meant the rest of your life. Then I turned and walked off the flag deck toward the shuttle bay, and Sarah fell in beside me, and Rachel fell in behind, and we went to thread the needle that would open the way to the Vault.

The shuttle was small. The lattice was enormous. And Tiffany was flying us through it with the calm, methodical precision of a woman who had spent her whole life solving problems that other people thought were impossible and who saw no reason to stop now.

"Grav-shear in four seconds," Gabriel said through the shuttle's comm. "Bearing two-seven-zero, descending at forty degrees relative. Differential: twelve hundred times standard."

"I see it." Tiffany's hands moved on the controls — not the panicked movements of someone dodging danger, but the smooth, continuous adjustments of someone who was reading space itself and steering between its teeth. The shuttle banked, dove, rolled, and the grav-shear passed above us like a wave breaking over a rock that was not where the wave expected it to be.

I wrapped us in barriers. Three layers — the outermost tuned to deflect gravitational shear, the middle tuned to absorb kinetic shock, the innermost tuned to Sarah Bennett's oldest and most fundamental instinct: keep my people safe. The barriers held the shuttle in a cocoon of my own certainty, and Tiffany flew through the gaps I gave her, and Rachel sat in the co-pilot's seat with her hands loose and her blue eyes tracking the lattice nodes on the tactical display with the particular attention of a woman who knew exactly what she was here to hit and was waiting for the word.

"Fold-trap forming," Gabriel said. "Ahead, two hundred meters. Recursion loop — if the shuttle enters the loop's mouth at current velocity, it will be ejected at three times that velocity into the grav-shear corridor behind us."

"Opening a counter-fold," Tiffany said. Her hands traced the equations — I could see them in the air around her, shimmering spatial mathematics that were as natural to Tiffany as breathing — and the fold-trap ahead of us twisted, bent, and collapsed in on itself, leaving a gap in the lattice that was barely wide enough for the shuttle to fit through.

"Barely" was enough. Tiffany aimed for it, and we went through, and the gap closed behind us like a mouth.

"Second array boundary," Gabriel said. "We are now inside the fourth array's operational zone. The convergence node is seventeen hundred meters ahead, bearing three-five-five, ascending." A beat. "The node is defended. Two garrison cruisers, waking-caste, weapons hot."

"They're not Bondborn?" I asked.

"Waking-caste. Ward-masters. They received Ammi's offer and responded with fire. They will not surrender."

I felt the shift in the shuttle — not a physical shift but an emotional one. The difference between threading hostile geometry and fighting people inside it. The difference between math and war.

"Rachel," Tiffany said.

Rachel grinned. It was the grin I had known for years — the bold, competitive, athletic grin of a woman who had been the team's heavy-operations specialist because she was the strongest and the bravest and the one who ran toward the thing everyone else ran from, and who had carried that identity into a gift that let her hit with the force of a Destroyer's main battery from her own two hands.

"How close do I need to be?" Rachel asked.

"The convergence node's power feeds are shielded against energy weapons," Gabriel said. "A kinetic impact — concussive force — applied at the node's primary junction will overload the feed regulators and cause a cascade failure. The node will collapse, and the fourth array's shear-envelope capability will collapse with it. Required force: approximately four hundred megatons, concentrated."

"I can do four hundred megatons," Rachel said, with the casual confidence of someone discussing whether she could carry the groceries in one trip. "I've done more."

"Range: direct contact. The node's shielding disperses energy at range. You will need to be on the node's surface."

"On it? Like, physically on it?"

"Physically on it."

Rachel looked at Tiffany, then at me, then out the forward viewport at the lattice's hostile geometry and the defended convergence node and the two garrison cruisers whose weapons were tracking our shuttle. "So the plan is: fly through a lattice that's trying to eat us, get past two cruisers that want to shoot us, land me on a node the size of a city block, and let me punch it hard enough to break the most advanced gravitational architecture in the known galaxies."

"Yes," Tiffany said.

Rachel's grin widened. "I love this plan."

"Tiffany, get us to the node," I said. "I'll shield us from the cruisers' fire. Rachel, be ready to move the second we're in range."

"I was born ready," Rachel said, and it was such a Rachel thing to say — bold and a little ridiculous and completely sincere — that I laughed, and Tiffany laughed, and the shuttle plunged deeper into the lattice with three women laughing inside it and the eldest geometry in the known galaxies trying to tear them apart, and somehow the laughter was the most important part.

The cruisers opened fire. Energy beams, high-intensity — the ward-masters' weapons were old and powerful and designed to kill anything that had made it this deep into the arrays. My barriers caught the fire. The absorptive shielding drank it, strengthened, and held. I wrapped the shuttle tighter, feeling each impact as a pulse of heat against my gift, and let Sarah Bennett's oldest instinct do what it had always done: stand between the danger and her people and refuse to move.

Tiffany dodged through the lattice with Gabriel in her ear, the two of them working the math in a kind of duet that I had never fully understood but had always trusted — his calculations, her intuition, the spatial equations resolving in real time as the lattice adapted and they adapted faster. A fold-trap formed ahead. She folded it back. A shear corridor opened on the left. She dipped under it. A recursion loop tried to grab the shuttle's mass. She changed the shuttle's velocity profile and the loop lost its grip.

"Convergence node in five hundred meters," Gabriel said. "The cruisers are breaking formation to pursue."

"Let them," I said. "They can't hit what they can't get through." I extended my barriers behind us — a wall between the shuttle and the pursuing cruisers, opaque to their weapons and to their sensors. They fired into it. The fire disappeared into my shields like rain into a lake.

"Node in range," Tiffany said. "Rachel — the dorsal hatch."

Rachel stood. She was already wrapped in her own gift — the kinetic-absorption field that made her, at full charge, one of the most destructive individual forces in the known galaxies. She looked at me. I looked at her. Two women who had served together for years, who had survived a prison and a rescue and a wedding and a war and eighty-eight days of walking the freed out of every dark place the universe could build, and who were about to do one more impossible thing because it was the right thing and because one of them could punch a hole in elder mathematics and the other could keep her safe while she did it.

"Shield me until I land," Rachel said. "Then pull back and cover the shuttle. I'll be about two seconds."

"Two seconds?"

"It's just a punch, Sarah. A very big punch. But still just a punch."

I wrapped her in barriers. She opened the dorsal hatch. The vacuum of the Long Dark roared in silence beyond the shuttle's atmosphere field, and the convergence node hung above us — a structure the size of a city block, humming with the gravitational power of the entire fourth array, its surface alive with the shimmering energy feeds that made the lattice's shear envelopes possible. Rachel looked up at it, her blonde hair whipping in the atmosphere field's edge-wind, her blue eyes bright and her gift blazing around her hands like contained lightning.

"Lord," she said, quietly, the way she always prayed before the hard ones — not formal, not elaborate, just the word, just the name, just the acknowledgment that what she was about to do was not by her own strength. Then she jumped.

My barriers held her until she hit the node's surface. She landed with the controlled precision of a woman who had trained for exactly this kind of thing — feet first, knees bent, hands braced against the node's hull. I pulled the shield back. She looked down at the shuttle, at me in the open hatch, and she grinned one more time.

Then she hit the node with everything she had.

Four hundred megatons of concussive force, concentrated into a single point of contact, delivered by a woman who could redirect kinetic energy the way a river redirected water — naturally, inevitably, with a force that had nothing to do with size and everything to do with certainty. The node's surface cracked. The power feeds beneath it ruptured. The gravitational cascade began — the feed regulators overloading one by one, each failure feeding the next, the shear-envelope architecture of the entire fourth array collapsing in a chain reaction that spread from the convergence point outward like ripples in a pond.

Rachel kicked off the node before the collapse reached her position, and I caught her in my barriers — wrapped her in protection and pulled her back to the shuttle with the particular fierceness of a woman who was not going to let one of her people float unshielded in the middle of a collapsing gravitational lattice, not today, not ever.

"Got her," I said. "Tiffany, get us out."

Tiffany was already moving — the shuttle banking hard, diving through the lattice's collapsing corridors as the fourth array's architecture fell apart around us. The grav-shear corridors flickered and died. The fold-traps dissolved. The shear envelopes unwrapped from the empty space they'd been constraining and dissipated into the dark.

"Fourth array is down," Gabriel said. "The corridor to the fifth array is open."

Rachel climbed back in through the dorsal hatch, breathing hard, grinning harder. I closed the hatch behind her and took a breath of my own — the kind of breath you take when the thing you feared was over and the person you feared for was safe and the job was done and there were still three more arrays to go.

"That was fun," Rachel said.

"That was terrifying," I said.

"Same thing," Rachel said, and put her arm around my shoulders, heavy and warm and carrying the particular weight of a woman who had just punched through elder mathematics and wanted everyone she loved to know she was fine. "Same thing, Sarah."

I watched the fourth array collapse on the tactical display, and I watched the three amber markers of the shuttle emerge from the lattice's remains, and I took a breath that I had been holding for approximately twelve minutes — the twelve longest minutes since the prison break four years ago, which had at least had the advantage of allowing me to be in the same room as the people I was terrified for.

"All three safe," Gabriel said. "Shuttle is returning to the Enterprise. The fifth array's outer boundary is now accessible."

"Status of Bondborn garrisons?" I asked.

"Across the first four arrays, approximately four thousand Bondborn have struck colors and are being received by the flotillas. Rowan is coordinating." Gabriel paused. "He says soup is holding."

I almost smiled. Almost. The twelve minutes were still too close. "The waking-caste ward-masters?"

"The ward-masters have refused the offer in every instance, per their standing orders. They respond to Ammi's broadcast with weapons fire. And so they fought, and so they died or were taken, and so the mercy was refused again, and the judgment fell again, and I was tired of it and would never stop offering it.

Amy appeared beside me. I hadn't heard her approach, which meant she had either walked very quietly or I had been more distracted than I thought, and given that Amy was the one person whose presence I could usually feel before she entered the room, I suspected the latter.

"You held your breath for twelve minutes," she said.

"I wasn't counting."

"I was." She slipped her hand into mine and laced her fingers through, and the binding carried what it always carried between us — her warmth, her certainty, the deep steady certainty that had organized nine women in a prison and held them together through five months of fear, the certainty that looked at the universe's worst offerings and said I see you, and you are not stronger than what I carry. "They're safe. All three."

"I know." I squeezed her hand. "Three more arrays."

"Three more arrays." She leaned into my shoulder, briefly — a moment's weight against my arm, her blonde hair brushing my jaw. "Tiffany was brilliant."

"Tiffany is always brilliant. It's when she's brilliant while flying through something that wants to eat her that I age ten years."

"You can't age. It's in the rules."

I laughed, because Amy could do that — pull a laugh out of me in the middle of a war, in the middle of fear, in the middle of a twelve-minute held breath that had compressed a universe of terror into a space the size of three amber dots on a tactical display. "Thank God for the rules," I said.

"Always." She kissed my cheek — quick, warm, her lips against the line of my jaw for a heartbeat and then gone, and in that heartbeat the binding said everything she didn't say aloud: I'm here, I'm yours, and you can hold your breath for as long as you need to, because I'll be the one who reminds you to breathe when it's over.

"Fifth array," Gabriel said. "Tiffany requests permission to remain on the flag deck for this one. She says she can direct the fleet's path from the tactical console, and — her words — 'the shuttle smells like Rachel's adrenaline and I need a minute.'"

"Permission granted," I said. "And tell Rachel her adrenaline can stay on the shuttle."

"Rachel says her adrenaline goes where she goes, and if you don't like it, you can take it up with her fist."

Amy leaned into my shoulder again, and her laughter vibrated against my arm, and the fifth array's hostile geometry waited ahead, and the Vault waited beyond it, and the Long Dark held everything in its lightless hands, and we went forward.

Amy

The fifth array was the worst.

Not the most complex — that had been the fourth, with its shear envelopes and its convergence node. Not the most heavily garrisoned — the sixth would prove to have more ships. But the fifth was the worst because the fifth was the one where the lattice started winning.

Tiffany was standing at the tactical console, her hands moving in the air, her blue eyes tracking spatial equations that the rest of us could barely see, and Gabriel was in her ear giving her numbers and projections, and she was unweaving the fifth array's architecture the way she had unweaved the first four — patiently, precisely, corridor by corridor. The resource commitment will be genuine. And the gap it creates will be — brief. Approximately fourteen seconds per feint. Enough to transit roughly twenty ships."

"Then we do it twenty ships at a time," Matthew said. "How many feints?"

Gabriel calculated. "Approximately three hundred, allowing for the lattice's eventual detection of the pattern and the necessary variation of the feint's location."

"How long?"

"Several hours. Less than the alternative."

Matthew looked at Tiffany. "Can you sustain it?"

"I can sustain anything that has an end point," Tiffany said. "And this has an end point. Seven arrays. We've done four. Three to go." She rolled her shoulders, flexed her hands, and turned back to the tactical console. "Amy, stay close. I may need you to keep changing the question."

I stayed close. Not because my gift could unweave lattices or compute spatial feints — it couldn't — but because what I carried was the thing underneath every gift, the thing that made every gift work better, the thing that had organized nine women in a prison and kept them alive and sane for five months and had kept the covenant's mercy flowing through eighty-one days of war: love, channeled, made tangible, held between my hands and offered to whoever needed it most. Then she opened her eyes, straightened, and said: "Two more."

"Two more," I said. "But first, you're eating something."

"Amy —"

"You haven't eaten in seven hours. Your blood sugar is something Gabriel could graph as a cautionary tale. You are eating something, and you are drinking water, and you are sitting down for ten minutes, and then you can go back to saving the fleet."

She looked at me with the expression of a woman who had just been told something she knew was true and didn't want to admit because the math was calling. Then she smiled — small, tired, grateful. "You sound like Sarah."

"Sarah taught me everything I know about making people eat."

"Sarah taught all of us everything we know about making people eat," Tiffany said. "Fine. Ten minutes."

"Ammi's offer is broadcasting," Gabriel said. "No response from the garrison."

"None at all?" Matthew asked.

"No Bondborn are present in this array's garrison. The sixth array is exclusively waking-caste. The ward-masters have sealed their communications against the hailer frequency. They are not listening."

The flag deck absorbed that in silence. "Seventh array," Gabriel said, and his voice carried something I had not heard in it before — not exhaustion, because Gabriel did not get exhausted, but something that in a human being I would have called respect. "The last one."

Lydia

I had been drawing the whole time.

Not drawing in the literal sense — my hands had been on the light-construct controls, my gift shaping structural reinforcement for damaged hull sections and energy-construct bridges between ships in the column that needed to share shield power across the gaps — but in my head, in the place where the documentarian lived, I had been recording everything. His voice was calm, warm, carrying the particular authority of a man who had been a Bondborn foreman on Ienna and who now stood as the covenant's foremost voice on how to receive people coming out of lifelong servitude into freedom for the first time.

"Lead with soup," he was saying, for what might have been the hundredth time in the campaign and what would certainly not be the last. "Not with questions. Not with forms. Not with explanations. A bowl. Warm. Something that tastes like it was made by someone who cared whether they ate today. The questions come after. The forms come after. The explanations come long after. The bowl comes now." A pause. "They will try to serve you instead. Let them hold the bowl. Don't take it from them. Let them learn that holding something doesn't mean carrying it for someone else."

I recorded his words in my memory the way I recorded everything — not just the content but the tone, the cadence, the particular way his voice softened when he said let them hold the bowl, as if the bowl were the most important object in the universe and the holding of it were the most important act, which, for someone coming out of bondage, it was. Rowan understood something about freedom that most people who had always been free could not understand: that the first act of a free person was not a decision or a declaration or a defiance. It was a bowl, held in their own hands, for their own hunger, chosen and not commanded.

"The seventh array is ahead," Gabriel said. "Configuration is — different."

"The shield interferes with spatial folding. The gravitational gradient disrupts the fold's coherence. A displacement or a rift that opened inside the shield's boundary would collapse before the transit completed." Tiffany paused. "I think. Gabriel?"

"Confirmed. The gravitational gradient's effect on spatial-fold coherence is severe. A standard rift would collapse within approximately point-three seconds of contact with the shield boundary. Insufficient for any transit larger than — " He calculated. "Approximately four meters cubed."

"Four meters," I said. "That's a person."

Everyone on the flag deck turned to look at me.

"A rift large enough for a person would survive point-three seconds inside the barrier," I said. "That's enough for a displacement. One person at a time. Send a team through — disable the shield generator from the inside — and the fleet transits normally."

"The shield generator is inside the Vault," Gabriel said. "The team would need to board the Vault, navigate its internal structure, locate the generator, and disable it — while three thousand ward-master warships on the other side of the shield attempt to stop them."

"We've boarded worse," I said, and I felt it — the pulse of something in my gift, in the energy-construct matrices that were my particular way of touching the world: a readiness, a resonance, the sense that the constructs I could build — bridges and shelters and tools and the light-hard armor that protected civilians and the bracing structures that held damaged corridors together — were exactly what a boarding team inside a hostile megastructure would need.

Matthew looked at me. He looked at me for a long moment. The binding carried what it carried — his love, his fear, the fierce protective instinct of a man who had ten wives and would walk through fire for any one of them and did not want any one of them to walk through fire without him. "Ammi's offer goes through first," I said. "The moment the shield drops. Into the Vault itself. Let them hear it one more time."

"One more time," Matthew said. "Always one more time."

He kissed me before I left the flag deck. Not quick, not hurried — a slow, deliberate kiss that started at my forehead and ended at my mouth, and the binding sang between us the way it always sang: his hands in my blonde hair, my fingers against his jaw, the knowledge that ran both directions like music through a wire — what he felt, what I felt, the fear and the love and the absolute certainty that I would come back because I always came back and because God had not brought us this far to lose us in the last mile.

"I know." He paused. "Tiffany, how long until the generator?"

"Gabriel estimates the internal distance from the access point to the most likely generator location at approximately twelve hundred meters. The Vault's internal structure is — complex. Multiple decks, cross-corridors, and what appear to be internal defensive systems. Time to the generator will depend on resistance."

"Resistance from the garrison?"

"The garrison is on the other side of the shield. They cannot access the Vault's hull sections while the shield is active — the same barrier that kept us out is keeping them in position along the shield's inner boundary. The internal defenders will be automated systems and possibly maintenance crews."

"Then she's alone in there."

"She's alone in there with thirty androids, Morrison, and the best energy-construct gift in three galaxies." I put my hand on his arm. It was not a clinical touch, not a technician's gesture — it was the touch of a wife who had been married to this man for four years and who knew exactly what he needed when his fear was running hot beneath his calm: contact, warmth, the physical reminder that the waiting was not solitary. "And you held the math together for all of it."

"Gabriel held the math. I just — saw the shapes."

"You see shapes the way Ammi sees songs," he said. "Nobody else can do what you did today."

I was going to say something modest, because Tiffany Brooks was precise and methodical and did not generally engage in self-congratulation. But the warmth in his voice and the pressure of his hand on mine and the binding's carried tenderness — his genuine, specific pride in me, not the generic husband-is-proud pride but the particular, detail-aware pride of a man who understood exactly what I had done and exactly how hard it had been — undid my composure. The ward-masters did not surrender. Not one. The clause held them. The Steward's voice had not released them, and no other voice had standing, and so they fought until the grid reached them and the fight was over.

It lasted fourteen minutes.

When it was done, the Vault stood bare — its defenses stripped, its garrison broken, its gravitational shield collapsed, its inner marches cleared from the first array to the last. The covenant's fleet surrounded the construct like a hand around a fist, a thousand Titans and the combined order of battle of three galaxies arranged around the structure that had been the Reckoning's heart for eight centuries.

And inside the Vault, below its deepest floor, in the preservation rows that held centuries of the taken, the sleeper-holds waited. Dark. Cold. Patient.

The way they had waited for eight hundred years.

I held Lydia. She pressed her face into my shoulder, her blonde hair against my jaw, her light-construct schematic still glowing in her hand against my back — a blueprint of destruction made luminous by a gift that existed to build and shelter and make beautiful.

"The vigil at the Gate-mouth," Ammi's voice said, small and ancient and carrying the weight of eight centuries, "will want to know."

"Send them one word," I said. "Held."

"One word," Gabriel confirmed. "One dispatch. Three bodies. Consistent with precedent."

"Held," Ammi said, and I could hear the smile in her voice — the smile of a woman who had sung the enemy's own language back to it as an offer of mercy, who had watched that offer refused by the clause-bound and accepted by the bred-to-serve, and who would sing it again tomorrow and the day after and every day until the last syllable of the Old Tally had been spoken in freedom instead of in fear.

I held Lydia, and the fleet held position around the Vault, and the Long Dark held everything in its lightless hands, and the moat was behind us, and the Vault's ring was in scanning range, and the sleeper-holds waited below, dark and cold and patient.

The flag deck was quiet. Amy was standing with Tiffany and Sarah and Rachel — four women, four gifts, four pieces of the day's impossible work. Sarah was leaning against Rachel, and Rachel's arm was around Sarah's shoulders, and Amy's hand was on Tiffany's arm, and the four of them were looking at the Vault on the viewport — the construct-fastness that had anchored the Reckoning's sleep for eight centuries, visible at last without a ward-array between the fleet and its hull.

Rear Admiral Priya Chandra's face appeared on the screen — steady, composed, carrying the particular energy of a flag officer who had been monitoring fleet telemetry from her post in the covenant's liaison rotation and who already knew most of what we were about to tell her. She smiled. "Sleep," Priya said — and the word was not an order from an admiral but a request from a mother, and the fracture in her voice showed through one more time before she sealed it. "Both of you. Sleep."

"Yes, Mom," Lydia said.

The call ended. Lydia turned to me, and the light-construct schematic faded from her hand, and her eyes found mine in the flag deck's quiet, and the binding carried what it carried — exhaustion and relief and love and the particular tenderness of a day survived and a door opened and a road still running ahead.

I took her hand. Lord, the last wall is down. The lattice is quiet. The garrison is broken. Four thousand Bondborn came home today, and they held their bowls, and Rowan was right — soup works better than guns. And the ones who wouldn't come — the ward-masters, the clause-bound, the ones who heard Ammi's song and sealed their ears — they are alive and they are taken and they are grieved, because every refusal is a grief, even the ones that cannot be helped. The vigil is told. Three galaxies are holding their breath. And we are at the door.
